Annual Service for my 99 Thundercat Empty Annual Service for my 99 Thundercat

Post  biscut Thu Jul 04 2013, 14:45

Hi
I live in Northampton and have just been quoted 200 pounds for an annual service including plugs change. Is that a good price or on the steep side. I forgot to ask what else was included as I was a little shocked by the price. Am I just being stingy ?

I'd expect to pay at least that, but then I'm in the Big Smoke.
Might be worth finding out what it is they will be doing - guess heaps of 'checks'

Annual Service for my 99 Thundercat Empty Re: Annual Service for my 99 Thundercat

my service in october of last year totaled £295, this in in banbury so possibly not too far from you. It included plugs, caps, air filter, new chain and sprocket too and labour costs. The chain and sprockets added a fair whack to the bill as they were expensive parts, but was needed.

I do my own oil changes now , got a haynes manual and some basic tools, costs me £25-£30 for a new filter and a big 5 litre jug of oil off the tinternet, takes me 45mins to and hr if I dont fanny around, the cats oil sump holds max 3.6 litres with a new oil filter or 2.8 litres if you dont change the oil filter, so theres always some left over for topping up and part of the following years change, plus its great as chain lube to.

add in the extra labour and parts cost of the oil and filter change and the price I paid would have gone up by some margin.

thank you all for the answers, have booked it in. Am not brave enough to do servicing just yet but might look at doing bits in the future once I get myself some tools. Looks like I am just stingy after all :-)

I think is Normal price but if you can do by yourself thats the best way! Only the basic,i mean change the oil, oilfilter, airfilter, sparkplugs change, chain, sprocket, brakepads, etc.. , you can save a lot of money!Im not trust any garage. They always took the big money from me for a nothing this is my experience. For example the Yamaha service in Crouchend(london)

Hey Tomcat
I am beginning to understand why people do their own servicing. It is something I would like to start doing but need to build up by doing the small easy bits first before I get more adventurous :-) don't have a lot of patience with things at the moment.

Did you book it in with Motorcycle World, Northampton ?

Don't worry, I don't have anything negative to say about them, but I would like to know what their hourly rate is.

I've just had a look at an old service receipt which came from the previous owner of my bike.

Flitwick Motorcycles.
03 June 2000.

  • Gasket x 1 - £0.95
  • Oil Filter x 1 - £6.97
  • Lubricant & Sundries x 1 - £2.00
  • Oil (£3.17 per litre) x 3 - £9.51
  • Spark Plugs (£4.40 each) x 4 - £17.60
  • Labour Charges (£31.91 ph) x 3.5 - £111.69
  • VAT @ 17.5% - £26.03

  • Total Cost - £174.75

And remember, that receipt is thirteen years old !

wow, after seeing that then I really dont feel quite so bad LOL

Yes, it is booked in with Motorcycle World, I have dealt with them a few times over my speedo cable issue and getting my MOT done and have nothing but good things to say about them. Will find out what their hourly rate is and let you know as I cant lay my hands on the last receipt at the moment.

Once you're more confident to service your own bike, expect to pay a ¼ of that price.

My Mechy charges £50 an hour and that London prices, would have expected lower else where - mind you I think BMW rush you over £100 an hour, another good reason to avoid that brand.

Well, I have to say that although Motorcycle World in Northampton potentially charged me twice for a steering nut (only a Tenner so not going to whine much) then they have done me well so far so will keep using them for the time being
